Project Management Training

Training in 120VC’s project management methodology is available to individuals and organizations that would like to put our proven methodology to work for them. Training is available in courses that correspond to the chapters in the 120VC Project Management Guidebook and, for those who wish to become certified in our methodology (120PMC), through our Project Management Training & Certification Program. Additional training is available to Project Managers who have earned their 120PMC to enable them to obtain their Auditor credential.

Project Management Training Courses — We provide a comprehensive suite of instructor-led training courses in our project management methodology. Our training courses are taught by seasoned 120VC Project Managers and explain the different tools used in 120VC’s methodology, describe the use of 120VC’s processes and templates, and provide instruction on the less tangible but equally important leadership, relationship-building, and executive communication skills required for effective project management. The courses qualify for the Professional Development Units (PDUs) that are necessary for Project Managers to maintain their PMP certifications.

Course participants receive handouts with samples and soft copies of relevant 120VC templates.

Project Management Training & Certification Program — The 120VC Project Management Training & Certification Program is for those Project Managers – individually or within an organization – who want to strengthen their abilities and learn how to implement our proven project management approach.

Like 120VC’s rigorous on-the-job training program, the Training & Certification Program has been developed recognizing that the most effective learning results when reading, explanation, demonstration, and on-the-job application can all occur. To provide this full range of experience, the Training & Certification Program requires that each participant work in an organization in which he can manage a project using the 120VC project management methodology. The program includes the following:

Each participant must study the 120VC Project Management Guidebook, 120VC’s 600+ page textbook, which fully explains 120VC’s project management approach, describes the use of 120VC's processes and templates, and provides instruction on the less tangible but equally important leadership, relationship-building, and executive communication skills required for effective project management. Along with the Guidebook, each participant receives the Project Audit Quick Reference Guide and soft copies of all proprietary 120VC templates.

Each participant must take each of 120VC’s instructor-led training courses, which correspond to and help clarify the chapters in our Project Management Guidebook. The classroom training helps prepare for our stringent certification exam and also qualifies for the PDUs that are necessary for Project Managers to maintain their PMP certifications.

While managing a project using the 120VC project management methodology, a participant must arrange to be audited by a 120VC Auditor at key points in the project: four times during project Planning, twice during project Kick-off, twice during Manage/Control, and once during project Closure. If a participant does not achieve the minimum qualifying score of 95% on any of these audits, he must arrange to be re-audited.

During these formal project audits, the 120VC Auditor will ensure that requisite project management quality and rigor are being maintained and provide training and mentoring to enhance the participant’s ability to follow and apply our methodology.

Once a Training & Certification Program participant has completed managing a project using the 120VC methodology, all required project audits with a minimum score of 95%, and all 120VC classroom training courses, he will be qualified to sit for the 120VC Project Management Certification exam, which he must schedule at least six weeks in advance. The four-hour exam has over 300 questions testing knowledge of all aspects of our project management methodology and requires the participant to achieve a minimum score of 90% to pass and thereby complete the requirements for the 120PMC (120VC Project Management Certification).

The 120PMC is not intended to replace but complement Project Management Professional (PMP) certification through the Project Management Institute (PMI). The PMI certifies an individual’s level of knowledge of the PMI’s project management principles while 120VC certifies that a Project Manager has mastered a methodology for applying those project management principles and has demonstrated the ability to deliver projects with a high degree of quality.

Accordingly, the knowledge required to earn the PMP provides a general background, principles, and concepts – like an undergraduate program – while the knowledge and experience required to earn the 120PMC is like that of a professional degree.

Auditor Training Program — We offer auditor training and certification to Project Managers who want to be able to perform formal project audits, document reviews, mentoring, and project backup, all of which are key to the success of our project management methodology. To be eligible, a Project Manager must have earned his 120VC Project Management Certification (120PMC), indicating his mastery of the 120VC project management methodology in concept and in practice and ensuring that he has the knowledge base required to audit and coach others.

Auditor training is one-on-one, requires an individual or organization to engage a 120VC Auditor on a consulting basis to train each Project Manager, and, like other training, qualifies for the Professional Development Units (PDUs) that are necessary for Project Managers to maintain their PMP certifications. The training runs on three tracks: The first track is the performance of weekly project audits; the second is the performance of document reviews periodically throughout a project; and the third is the facilitation of 120VC project management training courses.

At the outset of training in each track, the Auditor teaches the Trainee by example – performing weekly project audits and periodic document reviews while the Auditor Trainee observes – and provides instruction on the use of the Weekly Project Audit Checklists, the principles of auditing, the role and importance of auditing in 120VC’s project management methodology, and the use of 120VC’s performance analytics. When the Auditor determines that the Trainee has gained sufficient understanding of the process, the Trainee begins performing weekly project audits and periodic document reviews under his supervision.

The Auditor continues to supervise and provide coaching until the Trainee demonstrates competence in performing audits and reviews. The Trainee then begins performing audits and reviews on his own with the 120VC Auditor performing random monthly spot audits to confirm that the Trainee’s audits are in alignment with 120VC audit standards. The Trainee will earn his Auditor credential once he has passed three consecutive monthly spot audits and conducted 60 hours of 120VC project management training courses. He will then be qualified to perform formal project audits, document reviews, mentoring, and project backup, all of which are key to project success. Auditors are recertified annually to ensure that their audits continue to be in alignment with 120VC’s standards.
